Nats' goal: Tougher bail laws by Christmas
Criminals will soon find it harder to get bail as the National Government moves immediately to get tough on law and order. Justice Minister Simon Power said repealing bail laws passed by the Labour-led Government would be a priority when Parliament sat next month. National will return to a law that says bail will not be given if there is any risk to the public, rather than the more qualified "real or substantial risk" of Labour's legislation. The tougher definition is likely to result in an increase in the number of people being remanded in prison after being charged with criminal offences. Mr Power said the bail amendment would be put through Parliament under urgency when MPs returned on December 9 for a two-week sitting.
The aim was to reverse the bail changes by Christmas. "It is extremely important that we send an early signal that public safety is the number-one issue on our minds in the law and order area," he said. "The previous Government had lowering the prison population as their primary concern. We believe that should be a secondary consideration."
A new prison, in a yet-to-be-revealed location, was also being planned to cope with the extra prisoners.
Public safety? Since when the hell did any politician work over time during the holidays for public safety? This isn't going to be rushed through urgency while the news media go on holiday to Fiji for 'public safety', this is going to be rushed through because Simon (a Politician who has done more to convince NZers that Prison is a 3 star hotel and who also called to shut this blogsite down) intends to start the privatization agenda of prisons without the pesky media asking questions about such a mammoth change in our prison system. Nice to see the exact same private prison industry that Simon wants to bring quietly here over the holidays has resulted in an indictment in America against Dick Cheney..
Cheney, Gonzales indicted in South Texas county
Cheney is charged with engaging in an organized criminal activity related to the vice president's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds financial interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.
Oh and while National are trying to implement Dick Cheney's prison system in NZ, let's also remember that they have adopted ACT's 3 strikes and you're screwed $3.5billion-$5.5billion vengence program through to select committee AND allowing police to take DNA samples from everyone arrested for an offence for which they could be sentenced to jail, note you won't have your DNA taken if you are CONVICTED of a crime, the cops will take DNA off us for merely being ARRESTED that is a massive erosion of your rights when under arrest that simply hasn't been discussed in the media.
The myth of the Nanny State is spent, now we have the reality of the Daddy State, how's that change feeling NZ? Does it feel like yet folks?
